Talk About Bradford

September 24, 2007 in Uncategorized

Many people are starting to notice that TalkAboutBradford.com has been closed (again). The truth is, it’s very difficult to provide a forum for free speech without exposing one’s self to a lot of liability. A lot of patience and work is involved in keeping a virtual community both civil and interesting. Forget about making money, it needs to be a labor of love.

That said, a virtual community is a nice thing to have. Sort of like the old barber shop, or the cracker barrel at the general store. People can gather to gab, say their piece, or just listen to catch up on what’s happening. If you plan to start another Bradford-related forum, please let us know, so we can post it here.

  1. A real shame that we’ve lost this forum again. Regular users know why and I won’t rehash it here. Free speech is a right but sometimes goes too far. While a large company can afford the high cost of defending free speech, small businesses can’t. I can understand TabAdmin’s situation.

I’ll miss TAB, as will others for whom it was a link to the old hometown, I’m sure. Would love to see someone pick up the ball but I’m not optimistic. Good luck to all former TABers.

  2. Sorry to hear…I’ve been on TAB since it first began. I’m out of town so I don’t know what happened if someone wants to drop me a line.

  3. Funny, I don’t think anyone reading the forum posts on TAB recently would have confused it for a barber shop or cracker barrel.
Personal attacks have no place online or anywhere else. Getting rid of a few bad apples is needed before another online forum can be established. Don’t confuse free speech with free reign to attack innocent people.

  4. That didn’t take long. Guess people forget that freedom of speech may be a right, but it comes with responsibility.

  5. We all want to stick up for what we believe in and whether it’s right or wrong, we take the chance of bringing on that liability. “sigh” I miss the good old days when MCamp was still alive and the most we had to tal about was “blathering and whatnot”

  6. I don’t think it was the responsibility of any of the posters that was responsible for the closing of the TAB the second time.

I would say it was the unwarranted threat of a lawsuit by a person being discussed. He was a public figure, not a private individual. I didn’t read anything about him that was slander. For the most part people were quoting from his website or offering their opinions on his line of work. He put himself out as a very public figure, including placing himself and information about himself, his life and his family on several webpages on the internet. It shouldn’t be unreasonable for people to comment on such pubic displays.

There is another message board that has more on this topic the message board is at:
    http://www.instantmessageboards.com/viewforum.php?f=71689

And you can read the post “Every day is like the first day of the weekend”

A very appropriately named post I might add.

  7. I hadn’t been on TAB for awhile. I don’t know what happened but I really miss the reading. I live out of state now and it was nice to hear what was going on. Too bad, it’s a shame your down again.
