Aiden Davis Has Cancer
November 30, 2007
A benefit for Aiden Davis and his family will be held Saturday, Dec.1 at the Limestone Fire Hall from 1:00PM to 7:00PM. There will be a buffet dinner with Chinese auctions, 50/50s, and a gun raffle. Many nice items to raffle off. There will also be a baked food sale.
This benefit is really important. Many local businesses and individuals have donated items for the raffle. This fund raiser can help make the difference when there’s a choice between a promising treatment or settling for what insurance will cover. Anyone who has been in a similar situation knows that medical bills are not the only expenses. Aiden’s treatment requires many trips to Buffalo. His parents still have bills to pay and Aiden has a little brother at home too. He has a big loving family that are actively involved, but they can only bear so much. You can do a lot of good by stopping at the Limestone Fire Hall and buying some raffle tickets or baked goods.
Originally there was some confusion about this benefit, you can read about it on TalkAboutBradford.com. All confusion has been resolved and the benefit is on! Thanks to Aiden’s mother, Amanda Davis, for taking the time to give me some of his history:
Aiden Matthew Davis was born on October 13th, 2004. He was a healthy little boy until just recently in July of 2007, he started limping and complaining of pain in his right leg.
His parents took him to the doctor for this problem and the doctor said it could be muscle spasms or weakness. His limping and pain went away for a while so his parents stopped worrying.
His limping and pain got worse in the month of October. It was on and off, and some days he would not eat or play because he was in discomfort.
On October 14th, 2007, one day after his third birthday, Aiden’s parents took him to the Bradford ER, where they did X-rays. They found nothing abnormal. He went to his primary physician the next day. She referred him to Pittsburgh to see a pediatric neurologist. Another dead end, as they did not believe it to be a neurological problem. They said he needed to see an Orthopedic Surgeon.
During the next couple of weeks, his mother called most of the Orthopedic Surgeons in the area, where she found that since Aiden was on the PA access card, no body would accept him as a patient. His father then decided he should put him on his insurance.
Aiden had a follow up appointment with his pediatrician on October 30th. His doctor ordered a CAT scan that day, and they performed this in Bradford. Here, they found “a mass” that “could be a tumor,” on his right hip. Aiden’s doctor referred him again, this time to Buffalo Women’s and Children’s Hospital the very next day.
Doctors in Buffalo confirmed that there was a tumor. After a another CAT scan, MRI, and a biopsy they had enough information to give a diagnosis. On November 5th, they diagnosed him with metastatic Ewing’s Sarcoma. (the tumor that started on his hip had metastasized, or spread, to his lungs) Ewing’s Sarcoma is a type of bone cancer that occurs within the bone or the soft tissue around the bone. They informed us that the lungs is a very common place for this cancer to spread.
A very aggressive cancer, they are treating it aggressively. He will be receiving 6-7 rounds of chemotherapy. After chemo, they feel that they will need to do radiation on his right pelvis and possibly surgery to remove the rest of the tumor. Then after he recovers from the radiation and possible surgery they plan on giving him another round of chemotherapy to make sure every cancer cell is killed.
