The 15th Annual Allegheny Defense Project’s Fall Gathering is this Weekend

September 23, 2008

We received the following announcement from stony99@verizon.net:

This weekend the Allegheny Defense Project will hold it’s annual fall gathering in the Red Bridge area of the Allegheny National Forest.

The fall foliage is spectacular and the weather will be great.

It will be Friday Sept 26th, Saturday Sept 27th, and Sunday Sept 28th.

What is the “Fall Gathering”?

It’s a family oriented event providing time for Allegheny Defense Project members, supporters and “environmentally conscious” individuals to come together in the fall to camp, hike, eat and learn about issues impacting the Allegheny National Forest, Pennsylvania’s only national forest.

The Allegheny Defense Project is an organization founded on principles of non-violence and requests that participants do not bring any illegal substances to our functions. Your well behaved pets are always welcome.

Friday evening we will be setting up camp. We will get together to set up tents, the food area, prepare dinner, and spend time around the campfire renewing acquaintances and providing updates on Allegheny National Forest issues. Feel free to bring musical instruments. We will be doing an after dark hike nearby.

Saturday we will wake up to a nice healthy breakfast, and do a campfire update on Allegheny National Forest issues, before heading out to spend the day updating and educating supporters on ANF issues with on site hikes. We will be doing a “Magnificence to Mismanagement” Oil and Gas hike to the headwaters of Indian Run where the Snyder Brothers Oil spill occurred. Bring your cameras. We will be visiting for the first time this year the three or four new “Allegheny Defense Project’s” geocaches!

Local geocacher Jim B. will talk about how to use a GPS to accurately locate areas of special concern – both environmentally significant species and to document environmental damage.

We will return to the campsite for lunch. In the afternoon we will do a second tour, perhaps to Rim Rock. At Rim Rock we will witness the area undamaged by the proposed oil and gas well drilling, AND we can bring ropes and rappelling gear to set up a rappelling or climbing station for some afternoon fun! We can rappel or rock climb while others explore the two caves, or visit the “Chief Cornplanter geocache” placed by Stoneman and Company.

Saturday evening we will return to camp for dinner. Saturday night we will enjoy time around the campfire and do another “after dark” hike.

The area we are camping in was once a Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camp, and during WWll it was used as a prisoner of war camp. This area we are camping in (the headwaters of Mead Run), has quite the history. It’s a short walk down to a wild and remote section of Kinzua Creek.

Sunday will be breakfast followed by a hike to an Allegheny National Forest roadless area proposed for a massive oil and gas development. We will return for lunch and then the breaking down of camp.

The schedule is flexible and you can come out and spend whatever time you have whether its for one event, a meal, any day, the whole weekend, or just stop by for the campfire in the evening.

Please let us know if you are coming so we can be sure to have enough food.
