DEP, Chesapeake Investigating Methane in Water WellsPosted on: 5:49 pm, May 21, 2012, by Jim Hamill, WNEP-TVState environmental officials along with Chesapeake Energy are trying to find out what is causing methane in some drinking water wells in Bradford County.The discovery was made over the weekend and as some people worried that their water may not be safe to drink.A homeowner noticed his drinking water well was bubbling up and so he called Chesapeake which has numerous natural gas wells in the area.Now Chesapeake Energy and the DEP are trying to find out what is causing the methane gas to turn up where it should not be.A vent covers Lee Franklin’s water well and his home near Canton is now the focus of an investigation involving the state Department of Environmental Protection and Chesapeake Energy.Officials said methane turned up in Franklin’s well.

Broken Fitting Caused Natural Gas LeakThe natural gas leak that caused the evacuation of hundreds of residents of the Woodhull area and closure of State Route 417 on Friday night about 8:20 pm, was caused by equipment failure at an above ground riser owned by Dominion Transmission of Clarksburg, West Virginia, according to a report filed with the National Response Center at 10:05 pm on Friday.CALLER REPORTED THAT A HALF INCH FITTING BROKE OFF A RISER AND RELEASED NATURAL GAS INTO THE ATMOSPHERE.There were no injuries reported, and people were allowed to go back in their homes a little after 11 o’clock.Authorities went door-to-door telling people to evacuate to both Jasper and Addison high schools.
